He and I had some common interests, and we talked and danced all night. He asked me out the next weekend. We've now been married for 15 years. Something I've noticed about this relationship that's different from my first marriage is that I'm more forgiving, and I try to stop and think before I speak. When you're older you're more set in your ways and less flexible in relationships, so you have to work harder to be compassionate and caring to your partner.

We would see each other whenever I went to large parties that were thrown by my best friend's family, but it wasn't until that we officially had our first date. We've now been married for 16 years, and our marriage is so different from my first one. For starters, we're much more independent. My first husband was on the demanding side and felt that we needed to be together all the time.
My second husband is just the opposite. We were married for 28 years, and after we split I had no intention of ever marrying again. Then, in July , at age 51, I went to a mutual friend's party and saw this tall, good looking, engaging man walk through the door of my life. I later learned that, shortly before we met, he had severed yet another a long-term relationship and had decided not to pursue another. We were both smitten but our relationship early on was a slow burn; we saw each other regularly for three years and then lived together for three years before we got married in Ours is a marriage grounded on kindness, honesty, and integrity.
